5 Things You Need to Invest in for Writing on the Go

If you’ve turned writing into a career, then something you’ve probably thought about is how to keep writing while you’re on the go. Perhaps you travel around the world to take pictures and get ideas for content, or maybe you work a regular day job that involves long and unproductive commutes. Whatever your ideas are, here are a few ways to help you keep writing on the go no matter where you are.

Invest in a Laptop

If you don’t already have a laptop, then you’re missing out on a wealth of opportunities. Since writing isn’t very demanding for computers, you could essentially do it from a smartphone or even a tablet with an external keyboard. However, there’s nothing as simple and productive as a basic Windows laptop with a comfortable keyboard.

Instead of focusing on specs such as hard drive space and processing power, get a laptop with fantastic battery life so you can continue working no matter where you are, and you won’t have to charge it very often which is perfect if you’re a travel blogger.

I personally love the Lenovo IdeaPad laptop powered by AMD. It has laptop or tablet functionality and Active Pen support on select models. With up to 8 hours and Rapid Charge technology with IdeaPad, I can take it anywhere and be sure that I’ll have enough battery life to carry me through. Plus, it’s small and light (only 4.63 pounds!), but has a full-size keyboard. I can slip it in my beach bag or carry on and go.

I’ve got my IdeaPad in my purse and I’m ready to go.

A Place to Save it All

Then, once you have the laptop taken care of, invest in a portable hard drive to hold all of your photos and such. I use the pocket-sized My Passport with 2 terabytes of memory. Having an external hard drive is important because it can back up all of your work and will still be okay if your laptop breaks down. Backing your work up to cloud storage is another option.

Carry Some Equipment

You’ll find that you don’t need to carry much in order to continue blogging on the move. Get a stylish business backpack to store your laptop, camera and charger and you’ll find it’s much easier to stay productive on the go. They don’t cost much, they’re extremely durable.

A Place to Work

If possible, also get something like a portable table to have a place to put your devices when there’s no desk nearby. This Tabletote Plus Portable Compact Computer Stand folds up and can be strapped to your backpack. Plus, it has enough room for your phone and your drink.

Peace and Quiet

You can’t blog while you have people shouting around you, and it’s hard to focus on your writing when all you can hear are cars and trains rushing past. Find a quiet place to type if you want to blog on the go, such as a hotel room or an empty library.

If you want to commute on the train or someplace bustling, such as a coffee shop, then consider getting a pair of headphones (wireless if possible) and play some soothing music that doesn’t have lyrics. Better yet, invest in some noise canceling headphones to get complete silence.
