I have a full standing desk, like this Halter model, but there are units you can buy that fits on top of a normal desk and will just raise your laptop or keyboard. These are less expensive than buying a whole desk. For example, the iCraze adjustable desk is under $30.
Next, we need to think about a great filing system for your home office. My favorite way to file items is digitally. You can scan documents or receipts, or take photos of them using your cell phone and keep the images in files on your computer. This is only a good idea for paperwork where you won’t need to keep the originals.
There are some scanners out there that will scan and digitally file your paperwork automatically, like the Neat Company NeatConnect Scanner.
Even if you’re working from home, you might still have a lot of hard copies of important documents and data. Not everything has to be digital, and sometimes it’s useful to have a hard copy of a file that you can layout across the desk.
However, if you’re going to do this, you need to make sure that you can easily find and access files. This means you need a great storage system in place. The best way to do this is to make sure you can slide out draws in a filing system completely so you can see all the paper that you have stored. You can do this by fitting the filing cabinet to the wall and then using sturdy metal drawer runners.
Finally, you need to make sure that you have a fantastic internet connection setup for your home office. If you have to deal with slow speeds, this is going to affect your productivity levels and the type of service you can offer to clients. Check online to see what the fastest speeds are in your area and make sure you use them. I use the highest package that Suddenlink has to offer, and I really happy with it. If you live in a rural area, you can use a signal booster. With this, it’s possible to get a faster speed than the one advertised by your provider.
